When is the railway open to the public?
We aim to be open to offer train rides most weekends from April to October. More details can be found here.
How can I help?
We are always on the lookout for help to run the railway, and anyone wishing to join us to operate the trains or maintain the track and rolling stock is most welcome.
Anyone wishing to drive the train will need to be a member of the society, and over the age of 16.
How do I join?
Please come along and see us in the clubhouse on a Saturday or Wednesday morning. We would recommend emailing us in advance, so you can check that there will be club members present when you arrive.
The club charges an annual membership fee, currently set at £20, with a lower rate of £10 in the first year of membership.
What does the club offer its members?
Members of the club have access to our workshop and tools, use of the track and carriages for their own locomotives, and any assistance or advice the club and other members can supply for other projects.
Do I need to be an engineer?
No, no engineering background or experience is needed.
Do I need any prior experience or interest in railways?
No, although the club is mainly railway orientated there is a wide range of interests and projects including model aeroplanes and boats, classic cars and static engines.
Recent years have seen miniature traction engines, static steam engines and aircraft engines running next to the track.
Who owns and runs the railway?
Paisley SME grew out of the Rolls Royce Welfare Organisation, and for many years was known as Rolls Royce Model Engineering Club, however, in 2001 the club became Paisley Society of Model Engineers. There is currently no connection with Rolls Royce.
Although the clubhouse, railway and associated buildings and infrastructure are situated on council land, Renfrewshire Council are not directly involved in the club, or in the running and maintenance of the railway. However Renfrewshire Council and its predecessors have supported the club in a number of ways. Renfrewshire Council has previously operated trains with their own staff and equipment, however have not done so in recent years.
